Summer flew by too quickly for me; however, like most Minnesotans, I love the change of seasons. The beautiful fall colors and cooler temperatures signal us to begin to tuck away our swimsuits, shorts and t-shirts and dig-out our sweaters, pants and jackets.

This change of season is the perfect time to pause and reflect on fitness goals; celebrate success, learn from set-backs, re-assess goals, make a new plan and move forward. This can be daunting, although it can also be very positive and up-lifting too! Find the courage to do what you want to do, set reasonable and measurable goals, and create action steps to make it happen. Go for it!

Easier said than done-right? Start with small wins and keep moving forward!

A few ideas to help you get started:

1. Focus on having a winning mindset! “I can make my goals happen!” In fact, “I will make them happen!”

2. Identify your fitness goals and WHY they are important to you?

  • What is my motivation? Why?

  • What will I look like when I accomplish this goal?

  • How will I feel? Will I have more energy?

  • What will I be able to do?

Self-discipline and willpower are big factors in reaching goals. Once you have identified your motivation and biggest WHY; Ask yourself:

3. What do I want? What will I do? What won’t I do? Make a list!

  • Then write your SMART goals. Focus on 1-2 main goals with supporting action items.

Specific: What is my goal?

Measurable: How will I be able to track results?

Achievable: Can I achieve my goal?

Relevant: Is it important to me?

Time-bound: When do I want to accomplish this? Set a date.

4. What other factors will help me keep my willpower strong?

  • Nutrition: Am I giving my body the right food?

  • Managing Stress: Am I managing stress in my life?

  • Sleep: Do I relax and get good quality sleep?

  • Moving my body: Am I staying active and exercising?

  • Socially: Am I doing things that bring me joy and help me feel happy?

Practice healthy habits to support your goals!
